Abstract:
Limiting the non-specific adsorption of proteins and cells, or biofouling, of surfaces is critical for the success of many current and future biomaterials technologies. The most common approach to prepare nonfouling surfaces is through the immobilization of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), or PEGylation. The most common PEGylation strategies, however, typically are limited in their application due to a dependence on specific chemical interactions with substrate materials and many are susceptible to thermal, oxidative, or hydrolytic degradation in situ.
